Artist Statement from Lena Balger
The sculpture “On Wings of Hope” intertwines with a famous poem by Ukrainian writer, Lesya Ukrainka, titled “Contra Spem Spero”. This poem represents the spirit of hope, that all Ukrainians have been raised with and the inner strength, that leads forward when there seems to be nothing to grasp onto. With the war that is happening in Ukraine, this poem touches upon a wide range of people and emotions, and it fills hearts with encouragement and connection within the community.
The major components of the sculpture are the phoenix wings and a flower crown – vinok. The phoenix wings’ color reference the magnificent Saint Michael statue in the heart of Kyiv, Ukraine. Saint Michael stands as the protector of people. Further, the Ukrainian Flag colors have been added to the color scheme: the yellow and blue signify the heroism, bravery, and courage of Ukrainians, and as the phoenix rises from the Ashes, reborn, so will the country of Ukraine. The phoenix wings can be also adopted by anyone who has a personal story of struggling through life but emerging from those difficult circumstances stronger and victorious.
In Ukrainian culture, the flower crown symbolizes victory, honor, accomplishment, empowerment, love, and peace. Each flower was hand-painted, and each floral element has its own meaning: sunflowers represent peace, resistance against invasion, and resilience. The sunflower is also the national flower of Ukraine. Poppy flowers represent honor and respect for fallen heroes; they are a symbol of peace, solidarity, welfare, and human kindness. Cornflowers represent courage, simplicity, and modesty. Marigolds are a symbol of the beauty of Ukrainian nature and the spirit and strength of the Ukrainian nation.

Thoughts away, you heavy clouds of autumn!
For now springtime comes, agleam with gold!
Shall thus in grief and wailing for ill-fortune
All the tale of my young years be told?
No, I want to smile through tears and weeping.,
Sing my songs where evil holds its sway,
Hopeless, a steadfast hope forever keeping,
I want to live! You thoughts of grief, away!
On poor sad fallow land unused to tilling
I’ll sow blossoms, brilliant in hue,
I’ll sow blossoms where the frost lies, chilling,
I’ll pour bitter tears on them as due.
And those burning tears shall melt, dissolving
All that mighty crust of ice away.
Maybe blossoms will come up, unfolding
Singing springtime too for me, some day.
Up the flinty steep and craggy mountain
A weighty ponderous boulder I shall raise,
And bearing this dread burden, a resounding
Song I’ll sing, a song of joyous praise.
In the long dark ever-viewless night-time
Not one instant shall I close my eyes,
I’ll seek ever for the star to guide me,
She that reigns bright mistress of dark skies.

Скульптура «На Крилах Надії» перегукується з відомим віршем української письменниці Лесі Українки під назвою «Contra Spem Spero». Цей вірш уособлює дух надії, з яким виховувалися всі Українці, внутрішньою силою, яка веде вперед, коли здається, що все втрачено. У зв’язку з війною, що відбувається в Україні, цей вірш викликає широкий спектр емоцій, він єднає і підтримує наші серця.
Скульптура складається з крил фенікса та віночка. Кольорова гама крил фенікса повторює кольори неперевершеної статуї Святого Михайла в центрі Києва в Україні. Святий Михайло вважається захисником людей. Жовта і блакитна барви прапора України символізують героїзм, хоробрість і відвагу українців. Фенікс відроджується із попелу, так відродиться й Україна. Крила фенікса також символізують особисту історію будь-кого, хто долає життєві негаразди, але виходить із випробувань сильнішим та непереможним.
В українській культурі вінок символізує перемогу, честь, наснагу, силу, любов та мир. Кожна квітка розписана від руки, і кожен квітковий елемент має своє символічне значення: Соняшники історично уособлюють мир, опір вторгненню та стійкість. Соняшник є національною квіткою України. Квіти маку – символізують шану та повагу до полеглих героїв; вони є символом миру, солідарності, добробуту та людської доброти. Волошки є ознакою мужності, простоту і скромності. Чорнобривці уособлюють красу української природи, дух і силу української нації.

Без надії сподіваюсь!
Гетьте, думи, ви хмари осінні!
То ж тепера весна золота!
Чи то так у жалю, в голосінні
Проминуть молодії літа?
